A Plumtree man is on the run after allegedly killing a neighbour recently following a dispute over a woman, police reported.

The police identified the suspect as Melusi Ndlovu (25), who resides in Makuzeze village under Headman Phahlana in Chief Tshitshi's area in Mangwe District.

The deceased is Mazibe Maphosa (27), also from the same area.

Ndlovu allegedly stabbed Maphosa with a knife and fled the scene. Maphosa died upon admission to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).

Matabeleland South police provincial spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele said Maphosa was in the company of Olert  Masuku (21) and Reply Ncube (22) when Ndlovu allegedly attacked him.

"Maphosa was in the company of Masuku and Ncube when they left Tshitshi Business Centre, which is in the Mphoengs area, after a beer drink at about 7pm. They proceeded to Fumabazhe Business Centre intending to watch a show," he said.

Insp Ndebele said Ndlovu arrived and summoned Masuku whom he accused of having an affair with his sister. He said Ndlovu went on to assault Masuku.

"Ndlovu called Masuku out of the tent and started accusing him of having an affair with his sister. A misunderstanding arose between the two and Ndlovu slapped Masuku once in the face," he said.

Insp Ndebele said Maphosa and Ncube rushed out of the tent with the intention of rescuing their friend but he had managed to flee and Ndlovu stabbed Maphosa.

"As Ncube and Maphosa approached, Ndlovu drew a knife and stabbed Maphosa. Maphosa ran for a few minutes before he collapsed and Ndlovu fled the scene.

"Maphosa was taken to Tshitshi Health Centre from where he was transferred to Plumtree District Hospital  and later to UBH where he died the following day," he said.

Insp Ndebele appealed to members of the public who might have information on the whereabouts of Ndlovu to alert the police.
