GOVERNMENT has not increased the civil servants' salaries despite Finance Minister Tendai Biti's promise that Government was going to award an "inflation-related" salary increment this month.

Some civil servants have already received their pay slips for this month indicating that there is no salary increase.

In an interview yesterday, Apex Council president Mr David Dzatsunga said the Government disappointed them.

He said they would convene a meeting on Tuesday next week to map the way forward.

"There has been no response from the Government on the issue of a salary increase. Some civil servants have already received their pay slips and according to the pay slips there is no pay rise this month," said Mr Dzatsunga.

He said Apex Council was therefore meeting on Tuesday to map the way forward. Mr Dzatsunga said they were still expecting to continue with negotiations with the Government on the issue of salaries review.

"We are still pushing for a meeting with the Government to discuss the issue of salaries review because workers are demanding salaries above the Poverty Datum Line (PDL)," he said.

Mr Dzatsunga said it was important for Government and workers to engage in collective bargaining in order to come up with agreed salaries.

"The Tuesday meeting will come up with a resolution on what action to take following the Government's failure to increase salaries as promised," said Mr Dzatsunga.

Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta) president Ms Tendai Chikowore said civil servants representatives had not heard anything from the Government.

"We have not yet received any response from the Government. We will soon meet as a committee to decide the way forward," she said.

In his 2013 National Budget presentation, Minister Biti said the civil servants salary increase was a top priority for Government this year, despite a liquidity squeeze that has seen Government spending 74 percent of its revenue on wages.

The lowest paid civil servants are getting $298 per month and the workers want the lowest salary to be above the PDL which is pegged at above $500.
