A traffic police officer was fatally knocked down by a Megalink bus after the driver failed to stop at a police roadblock in Mwenezi on Tuesday.
National police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri said the accident occurred at the 77km peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway after the bus driver, Patrick Mufudza, sped through a police checkpoint.
"It is true that a member of the force died after a Megalink Bus driver failed to stop at a roadblock and hit a drum which then knocked the cop to death," Phiri said yesterday.
The bus was coming from Harare going to South Africa.
He said the police officer was initially taken to Neshuro Hospital before being transferred to Masvingo General Hospital where he later died.
Police declined to identify him saying his next of kin were yet to be informed. Phiri said the driver has since been arrested and is likely appear in court soon.
