A 30-year-old motorist from Masvingo's Riverside suburb was last week robbed of cash, cellphone and clothes after he parked his vehicle intending to attend the call of nature at the 10-km peg along the Masvingo-Harare road last week.

The incident, which was confirmed by Masvingo provincial police acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna, happened on Thursday last week at around 6pm.

He said on the fateful day Mr Edward Kurwakumira of 29 Jobson Street, Riverside was travelling along Masvingo-Harare road when he was mugged after stopping at a lay-bye.

"Mr Kurwakumira was driving a Nissan vehicle towards Harare. Upon arriving at 10-km near a lay-bye, he stopped his vehicle and allegedly got into a bush to relieve himself. On his way back to the car, three unknown men suddenly appeared holding logs," said Asst Insp Nduna.

He said Mr Kurwakumira rushed to his car but found the car keys already removed.

"He rushed to the car but unfortunately, one of the men had allegedly removed the car keys. The trio allegedly assaulted him with fists and booted feet before disappearing into the bush but he did not sustain any injuries. The suspects went away with $300, R1 000, two cellphones - Nokia Usher and Samsung Quad 2 - Toshiba laptop, one satchel and several clothing items. The total cost of the items is not known. The trio is still at large. We have since launched a manhunt for them," he said.

Asst Insp Nduna has urged members of the public to comply with robbers' demands to avoid losing their lives.

"We urge members of the public to obey robbers' instructions so as to avoid being hurt. When you are confronted you must avoid resisting or fighting back, it is better to lose your property in place of life. We also urge motorists not to stop at lay-byes during the night. It is better to go to the nearest homestead where motorists can ask for convenience rooms than risking by getting into the bush," he said.
