South African police have arrested a Zimbabwean man after he allegedly fatally stabbed a 21-year-old woman. The man also allegedly attacked and seriously injured the woman's mother at Tshiombo village near Thohoyandou town on Christmas day.
The incident occurred at around 7pm when the two women were on their way home.
Mutale area police spokesman Captain Tshilidzi Nyambeni said the suspect will soon appear at the Mutale magistrate court charged with murder. He identified the victim as Phuluso Kharivhe (21).
He said the mother Christinah Kharivhe (48) escaped death by a whisker after being stabbed several times all over the body while fighting the suspect.
The woman is now recuperating at Donald Frazer hospital.
Capt Nyambeni said the suspect was arrested at Matangani village this week with the assistance of police from Thohoyandou.
"Investigations reveal that the suspect attacked the two women at around 7pm on Christmas Day while they were on their way home and coming from the shops.
"The man will soon appear at Mutale magistrate court charged with murder," he said.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate that villagers in the Tsiombo area are planning a wave of attacks on all foreigners living in the same area as a way of avenging the woman's murder.
Sources said yesterday that the community had since approached the local Chief Ratshilumela Tovhowani Mathoho over the issue.
