PREPARATIONS for the annual 21st February Movement celebrations have started in earnest with Mashonaland Central province set to play host to the event this year.

The 21st February Movement celebrations are held to introspect  and recognise the well-documented life of President Robert Gabriel Mugabe, who was born on the day in 1924.

Zanu-PF national secretary for youth affairs, who is also the chairman of the 21st February Movement national co-ordination committee, Absalom Sikhosana said over 60 000 people were expected to attend the ceremony.

"We have already started the preparations and so far everything is moving according to plan and we hope it will be a resounding celebration this year," he said.

Sikhosana said the host province had not yet decided on the exact venue, which was likely to be the gold mining town of Bindura.

He said celebrations this year would focus on raising awareness among young people on the need to be proud of being Zimbabweans.

"We are very worried that we have young people in our midst who celebrate foreign cultures, especially those of our former colonisers.

"Young people should embrace being Zimbabwean and commit to serving their people just like what the patron himself is doing," he said.

The 21st February Movement was established in 1986 as a welfare organisation for youths and as a medium to inspire young people to behave well through emulating the exemplary character of its patron, President Mugabe, who will be turning 89 this year.
