Three Zvimba men have been sentenced to an effective four-year jail term each for robbing a Harare man of $800 cash which he intended to pay his in-laws as lobola for his wife on New Year's Day.
The three, Pearce Pfupajena (37), Shepherd Kapfidze (20) and Evans Tapfumanei (22), all of Sikimarira village, Kutama, were initially sentenced to five years imprisonment each before one year was set aside on condition that they restitute the complainant $300 each before April 30 this year.
The Banket Circuit Court heard that on New Year's Day at around 7pm at Mariga village in Zvimba, Pfupajena approached Kudakwashe Mudziwa of Kuwadzana 6, Harare, who was in the company of his wife Nyasha Samkange and another relative Barbra Samkange on their way to pay lobola for Mudziwa's wife at Sikimarira village.
Pfupajena, who knew Nyasha as they came from the same village, offered to escort them. The court also heard that along the way, Pfupajena got information that Mudziwa had a large sum of money which he wanted to pay as dowry to his in-laws and he hatched a plan to rob him.
Pfupajena disappeared into the darkness and re-emerged moments later accompanied by Kapfidze and Tapfumanei who were not wearing shirts. Pfupajena charged towards Mudziwa and assaulted him with open hands and booted feet, while Kapfidze and Tapfumanei assaulted the two women demanding money.
The two women managed to flee and left Mudziwa behind at the mercy of the robbers who searched his pockets and took $800. His wife Nyasha later returned to the scene accompanied by a mob of villagers and found Mudziwa, who was injured, lying on the ground.
Barbra's handbag containing a Nokia cellphone and clothing valued at $110 was recovered at the crime scene.
The matter was reported to police leading to Pfupajena's arrest. He later implicated Kapfudze and Tapfumanei. The three counts of robbery were treated as one for purposes of sentencing.
Magistrate Ngoni Nduna presided over the matter, while Arthur Bosha prosecuted.
