A CHIREDZI man, Ramson Kundhlane, escaped death by a whisker after he was hammered on the head with a six-pound hammer by his uncle's general hand, Joshua Mujati (53) in Chimanimani.

Mujati appeared before a Chipinge magistrate, Mr Makamera Waini, facing assault charges and was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment of which six months were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Prosecutor, Mr Witness Nyamundaya, told the court that on January 3, Kundhlande who was in company of his father visited his uncle, Mr Nachi who resides in Muturikwe Village under Chief Muusha in Chimanimani. The two who had travelled from Chiredzi had trouble driving into the homestead due to a massive galley in front of the gate.

Kundhlande allegedly sought Mujati's help to fill the galley as he was repairing the fence a few metres from the gate. Mujati was employed by Mr Nachi as a general hand.

However, Mujati felt belittled by the request and shoved Mr Dumisani Kundhlande, father to the complainant.

Ramson intervened and quelled the misunderstanding. They continued with the task of filling the galley without Mujati.

However, moments later Mujati went to an unsuspecting (Ramson) Kundhlande and hit him with a six-pound hammer on top of his head once accusing him of calling him names. Kundhlande bled profusely and was ferried to Mutambara Mission Hospital where medical examinations showed that he had been seriously injured and that the assault could lead to permanent constrains like seizures and severe headaches.

Mujati who fled from the scene was arrested a few days later.
