Life has suddenly become hell on earth for a 36-year-old Chimanimani woman in whose family one person dies every four months as a result of her uncle's alleged failure to live by the vows of his paranormal money-spinning charms.

Mwaoneka Mutsanya of Hlabiso Village in Chimanimani now has to burn incense (kupfungaidzira) the whole night given to her by some spiritual healers to get a relatively decent sleep, lest she spends the night enduring a thorough beating from unseen assailants. According to Mutsanya, when it all started, one member of the family would die each year until 2011 when family members would die after every 4 months. Today, only four out of nine children in her family are left.

"We are in trouble as a family and do not know whether the surviving members will live for long. We used to know that every year a member of our family would die until 2011 when family members started dying after every four months. The death of a five-year-old child marked the turning point when people began dying after four months. This was my brother's daughter whom we stayed with at my father's homestead. After attending a church service, she started bleeding from the nose until she died.

"Four months later, my mother died. She was strong and her death was a shock to everyone. In fact, it was in the morning when she was asked to wake up and cook for our uncle who wanted to go to the grinding mill, only to find out that she had died in her sleep. She too was bleeding from the nose and her body was all BLACK with her teeth protruding from her mouth. It was just like scary, dead monster.

"Her body decomposed within a day and was buried the next day, while her coffin was wrapped using cloths and plastics to contain the stinking stench. After four months, when we went for my mother's memorial service, my sister died almost in the same manner in which my mother had met her fate. My sister's body, just like mum's, decomposed in a day.

We were all convinced that something was terribly wrong in the family, thus we started consulting spiritual healers as well as traditional healers. I was told that I was next in the line, but I was given some incense to burn every night so that I could escape the death toll. It worked out and when four months elapsed, my uncle's wife died, understandably in my place. I have also been told that I will eventually get insane or else it will catch up with me and die the same way," she narrated.

When asked of the possible caused of the ill-luck that has befallen her family, Mutsanya said her uncle (name supplied) and biological father were the hand behind the calamity after consulting a traditional healer who gave their uncle 'miracle' money-spinning charms. She passionately appealed for help from well-wishers saying peace was continuing to elude in the family.

"We were told that the two (her uncle and her father) went to a popular traditional healer in Chipinge called Chikunya who was well known for dipping his body in a river and coming out with maize cobs in his hands. We believe our uncle failed to live by the vows of his paranormal money-spinning charms and thus it is backfiring. When he was given the magical charms it worked as he went on to get a job as a senior manager in Harare. Surprisingly he neither had educational qualification nor experience at all.

"The same thing is that it is affecting my father's family while all, but two of our uncle's children are living large in the United Kingdom. The other one (name supplied) stays in Murehwa, while another one (name supplied) is in Mozambique. Our uncle pretends to love us. We have tried to bring our uncle and dad to the negotiating table, but it is surprising that our own father is the first to deny the allegations and does not even want the issue to be deliberated on.

"My only wish is that we get someone to assist us in ending this misfortune which has given us endless nightmares. At least my husband has been very supportive in this entire predicament. He has suffered undeservingly," she said.

Efforts to get a comment from the accused members of the family were fruitless at the time of going to Press.
