Magistrates strike paralyse Zimbabwe justice delivery system

A strike by magistrates has paralysed Zimbabwe's justice delivery system after courts failed to sit on Monday as the magistrates protested against poor working conditions.
Magistrates across the country went on strike to protest against low salaries and poor working conditions after the collapse of negotiations with the government. Only judges turned up for duty at the High and Supreme Courts, but the majority of cases are heard at the lower magisterial courts.
An official with the Magistrates Association of Zimbabwe (MAZ) told reporters that magistrates in the country had heeded the call for industrial action that he said was meant to compel the government to address their long outstanding concerns.
Magistrates want the lowest paid judicial officer to earn $1 000 per month, money which the cash strapped government of President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai says it does not have.
