The two police officers who are facing charges of criminal abuse of office after demanding US$30 thousand as bribe from suspects arrested for possession of 41 bags of mbanje have been released on US$50 bail each.

The two, Pearson Manwell and Kudakwashe Bere, who were not legally represented, applied for bail yesterday when they appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe.

It is alleged that Manwell and Bere arrested six suspects and demanded US$5 thousand from each of them in order to release them.

It is further alleged that the two were arrested at a service station while waiting for the bribe.

The 41 bags of dagga were recovered, while five other suspects are alleged to have fled and are still at large.

Only the truck driver, a Malawian national, was arrested.
