Zambia's first Republican President, Dr Kenneth Kaunda will be honoured at the 50th anniversary of the African Union (AU) for the role he played in the liberation struggles in the Southern African region.

Zambian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Francis Simenda said the historical event is set to take place at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa in May.

Mr Simenda said Dr Kaunda was among the great African leaders who contributed immensely to the liberation struggles in most African countries especially in Southern Africa.

He said Zambia under the leadership of Dr Kaunda, sacrificed much of its resources to liberate countries like Angola, South Africa and Mozambique among others.

Mr Simenda said it is surprising that Dr Kaunda's contribution to Africa's cause was never given prominence over the years.
