A CHIKANGA woman is demanding $2 500 from a policeman who allegedly assaulted her at a police station where she had been detained over a domestic dispute.
Stella Chigweshe of House Number 4891, Bernwin claimed that she suffered head injuries after she was attacked by Constable Gideon John with a baton stick at Chikanga Police Station.
The incident happened on December 13 last year.
In demand papers written by her lawyers, Legal Resources Foundation, dated January 4, 2013 - a copy of which this paper has in possession - Chigweshe said the $2 500 would cater for medical expenses, loss of earning as well as pain suffered as a result of the attack.
"(Our client) informs us that on the 13th of December 2012 at about 8pm, she had a misunderstanding with her neighbour who reported the matter to Chikanga Police Station. Our client was arrested and taken to the station where she was placed under police custody for two hours before charges were laid against her.
"As she was waiting for charges to be laid against her she received a call from her friend.
"As she was taking her call, she was informed that she could not take her calls in the police station, but before she could cut off the caller you assaulted her with open hands. When our client tried to defend herself from your brutal attack you then took a baton stick which you used to assault her all over the body. Our client managed to bite you on the knee in self defence.
She informs us that you have since placed charges against her alleging that you only assaulted her in self defence under RRB 1577467.
"This behaviour by you is very disturbing. Our client has since reported the assault which you perpetrated. Our client had to seek treatment and incurred medical expenses, loss of earnings as well as pain and suffering in the sum of $2 500 made up as follows; medical expenses ($200); transport costs ($100); loss of earnings ($1 000) and pain and suffering ($1 200)."
As a result of the assault Chigweshe claims that her sight was affected and she now requires spectacles to improve the condition.
She has since visited the Council for the Blind and was told to bring $200 in order to acquire the spectacles.
However, according to court records, the police officer filed criminal charges against the woman for assault.
The case is expected to go for trial on January 24 in Court D at the Mutare Magistrates' Courts and the woman is expected to answer to charges of assaulting a police officer.
