A six-year-old Chipinge girl allegedly went berserk and fatally assaulted a two-year-old baby with a hoe several times on the head before burning her hips with a smoldering log last weekend.
Police in Manicaland confirmed the gory incident, which left Latise villagers under Chief Mapungwa weak-kneed.
Acting provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chanda, said the baby died upon arrival at Mt Selinda Hospital after sustaining serious injuries all over her body. Asst Insp Chanda said the baby was left unattended by her parents, Constance and Steven Nyikadzino who had gone to fetch some water.
"The six-year-old girl assaulted her with a hoe several times on her head. She went outside, took a smoldering log and burnt the baby's hips. Realising that the baby was bleeding profusely, the girl stormed out of the house. She, however, met the baby's parents, Constance and Steven who quizzed her about what had happened. She divulged what she had done. The couple took their baby who was writhing in agony to Mt Selinda Hospital where she died upon arrival," he said.
Police briefly picked up the girl, but later released her into the custody of her uncle, Phanel Mlambo. Asst Insp Chanda said investigations were in progress. The baby was laid to rest on Sunday.
