The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) says it plans to introduce motor vehicle registration at the ports of entry to de-congest inland offices.

ZIMRA says it is engaging all relevant departments in vehicle clearance to ensure there is full compliance with the country's laws.

The implementation of the initiative will mean that motor vehicle importers leave the ports of entry with all the relevant documents including number plates.

In a speech at the occasion of the International Customs Day, ZIMRA Commissioner General, Mr Gershem Pasi expressed optimism the process will be completed this year.

He said the authority is investing in efficient clearance systems for smooth flow of traffic.

Meanwhile, the authority says it has embraced latest systems such as the ASYCUDA, so as to cope with huge flow of traffic during the forthcoming United Nations World Tourism Organisation's (UNWTO) General Assembly.

The International Customs Day, which this year has been held under the theme, 'Innovation for Customs Progress,' comes at a time ZIMRA is being criticised for failing to deal with congestion at the ports of entry and for  alleged cases of corruption by its officials.
