A 29-year-old suspected rapist has left the Chimanimani community shell-shocked after axeing the victim's father to death before administering a pesticide to himself and the victim's mother for reporting the matter to police.
The alleged rapist, Petros Mukambeni (29), of Musukutwa village under Chief Mutambara in Chimanimani, died last Friday after consuming a pesticide, while the victim's mother Diana Nyandoro is still battling for her life at Mutambara Mission Hospital.
Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Enock Chishiri confirmed the incident and said the victim's father Elijah Karenyi (40) died after the attack, while Mukambeni died later after consuming a pesticide.
He said circumstances surrounding the incident were that on January 23 Mukambeni heard that police were looking for him for allegedly raping the deceased's 12-year- old daughter.
"Armed with an axe, Mukameni went to Karenyi's homestead where he force opened his bedroom hut and accused the deceased of concocting falsehoods against him.
"In a fit of rage Mukambeni then struck Karenyi twice in the head using the axe before he could answer to the allegations.
This happened in full view of his wife who managed to escape from the charging Mukambeni," Chishiri said.
Karenyi died on the spot.
After the attack, police from Cashel Station went on to investigate the matter, but upon reaching Musukutwa village near Mukambeni's homestead, they found him lying unconscious by the roadside 200 metres from his homestead.
Police also found the victim's mother Diana Nyandoro lying unconscious 30 metres from her homestead.
Chishiri said the two were taken to Mutambara Mission Hospital where they were admitted. Mukambeni died last Friday while Nyandoro is still admitted in hospital.
