A memorial service for four activists of the Movement for Democratic Change belonging to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, who were brutally murdered by state security agents in the run-up to the 2008 controversial presidential run-off, will be held on Wednesday.
The memorial service for Tonderai Ndira, Cain Nyeve, Better Chakururama and Godfrey Kaunzani – the four MDC T activists whose decomposed and brutalised bodies were found dumped at farms in Mashonaland East – would be held at the Dutch Reformed Church in the capital while the unveiling will take place at Warren Hills cemetery.
The MDC T claimed the June 2008 polls left about 300 of its supporters dead.
The memorial service has been organised with the assistance from Heal-Zimbabwe, a local non-governmental organisation. The organisation said an estimated 217 people lost their lives in the post 29 March 2008 political violence, "in the most cruel and dehumanising conditions in the history of Zimbabwe's democratisation process".
Heal Zimbabwe say it is working with families of people killed in 2008 and has managed to hold 79 memorial services for victims in Muzarabani, Zaka, Mwenezi, Headlands, Gokwe, Buhera, Mutoko and Murehwa.
"It is significant to set time aside to celebrate the lives of those who sacrificed their lives for the struggle for democracy in Zimbabwe," noted a statement by Heal Zimbabwe.
The violence during the 2008 elections led to the inconclusive presidential polls which in turn led to the SADC brokered government of national unity between President Robert Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara.
