A Mufakose man, who axed and seriously injured a security guard he accused of harassing his child, was yesterday jailed two years effective.
Priviledge Matinyanya (31) pleaded not guilty to attempted murder when he appeared before regional magistrate Ms Fadzai Mthombeni.
He was convicted because of overwhelming evidence.
Ms Mthombeni sentenced him to three years in jail but set aside one year on condition of good behaviour.
In passing sentence, Ms Mthombeni said Matinyanya's defence that he acted in self-defence did not hold water as the complainant fled when he became violent.
Prosecutor Mrs Valery Ngoma proved that on October 7 last year the complainant Tererai Chapfunye, who is employed as a security guard at Spar Mufakose, was deployed at the shop's entrance where he met Matinyanya and they had an altercation.
Matinyanya became violent and Mr Chapfunye ran inside the shop to seek assistance with Matinyanya in hot pursuit.
Matinyanya grabbed an axe, which was used by Spar workers to cut firewood, and struck Mr Chapfunye twice on the head and an arm.
He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Parirenyatwa hospital where he was treated.
