A CHIMANIMANI rape suspect allegedly went berserk and axed the victim's father before poisoning her mother whom he was also bedding, in an incident which left villagers shell shocked.
Police confirmed the incident which happened in Musukutwa Village under Chief Mutambara.
It is alleged that Petros Mukumberi Mapoto (29) recently raped a 12-year-old juvenile before he axed the juvenile's father and poisoned her mother.
The juvenile's father (name withheld) died on the spot after he was struck twice with an axe on his head and sustained deep injuries.
The juvenile's mother is battling for her life at Mutambara Mission Hospital, while Mapoto later died after both of them consumed an unknown poisonous substance in unclear circumstances.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Enock Chishiri, said investigations were in progress.
He said on December 26, Mapoto became unsettled after he was accused of raping a 12-year-old juvenile (name withheld) of the same village.
The infuriated Mapoto further learnt that police were looking for him over the allegations and decided to handle the case in his own way.
"He took an axe at around 2am and went to the victim's father (40). He gained entrance by breaking the door. He budged into the bedroom where the juvenile's father and his wife were sleeping and quizzed the duo about the rape allegations. Mapoto questioned the juvenile's parents on the reasons behind the police report they had made. Before the juvenile's father answered him, Mapoto struck him twice with an axe on the head and he died on the spot," said Insp Chishiri.
The juvenile's mother who was in a state of disbelief fled from the house. Police from Cashel attended the scene.
That same day, Mapoto was found lying unconscious 200 metres away from his homestead by the roadside. They also found the juvenile's mother lying unconscious 30 metres away from the same homestead.
Police said: "From our investigations, the two are believed to have consumed unknown poisonous substances. Further investigations also revealed that Mapoto and the juvenile's mother were allegedly having an extra-marital affair."
The two were admitted at Mutambara Mission Hospital and Mapoto died on January 26, while the juvenile's mother was reportedly in a critical condition.
