A Chitungwiza cop, using inside knowledge, teamed with a friend to rob a vehicle which had been stolen earlier, a Harare magistrate has heard.

Mutindi Mutindi, a 35-year-old assistant inspector at St Mary's Police Station, yesterday appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe facing charges of robbing a motor vehicle.

The court heard Mutindi and his accomplice, who is still at large, last week received information that the complainant was driving a stolen vehicle.

The complainant is not named in court papers.

According to the prosecution, the two met the complainant driving the vehicle and blocked his way before telling him they were cops from Marondera.

Mutindi allegedly produced a pistol and pointed it to the complainant demanding the vehicle and its import papers.

Prosecutor Tungamirai Chakurira told the court Mutindi and his accomplice took the vehicle and the papers purporting to have arrested the complainant.

Mutindi, the court heard, instructed his accomplice to drive the stolen vehicle to an unknown destination. He then asked the complainant to join him in his vehicle and drove to Makoni Shopping Centre where he later picked his accomplice.

The two allegedly drove to a bushy area at Ziko in Seke where they ordered the complainant to disembark from the vehicle but he refused.

They later took the complainant to Chikwanha Shopping Centre where they dumped him after giving him $5.
