A KOMBI driver who ran over a pedestrian while fleeing arrest will spend 12 months in jail.
42-year-old Albert Mawire ran over and seriously injured an elderly woman while fleeing from the police. Harare
magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe convicted Mawire of negligent driving on his own plea of guilty. Mr Mahwe sentenced Mawire to 15 months behind bars but set-aside three months for five years on condition of good behaviour. In addition, Mawire was barred from driving for the next two years and his licence was cancelled.
In passing sentence, Mr Mahwe said there was a shocking rise in reckless driving cases by kombi drivers.
"The kombi drivers' manner of driving is now a cause for concern and the court needs to pass a deterrent sentence," he said.
In October last year, Mawire parked a Toyota Hiace kombi at an undesignated point along Mbuya Nehanda Street intending to load passengers. Mawire saw police officers approaching and suddenly started the engine in a bid to evade arrest.
A 57-year-old woman, who was about to board the kombi, fell to the ground before she was run over by Mawire. She sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital where she was admitted.
