Govt plans to introduce online vehicle registration systems

The Zimbabwe government plans to introduce online registration of vehicles to reduce congestion and corruption in the existing system, an official said.
The Central Vehicle Registry currently works manually through inland offices and has been experiencing congestion as more people now own vehicles, mostly second hand, which are imported at low prices from Japan.
Transport, Communications and Infrastructure Development principal director Valentine Sinemani said the system would be installed within the next six to eight months.
"We are moving towards integrated information systems, transferring from inline to online," he said.
Sinemani said adoption of information communication technology (ICT) in vehicle registrations would reduce congestion and corruption at inland offices.
"The policy issues are currently being worked on. As soon as they are complete we will begin the processes," he said.
He said computerising the systems would also make vehicle tracing easier.
"About 80 percent of all crimes involve vehicles, therefore fast access of information will make police investigations easier," he said.
Recently the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority said it would this year introduce registration of vehicles being imported into the country at border posts in a bid to decongest its in-land offices.
The authority said it wanted to create a one-stop shop for clearing imported motor vehicles to avoid inconveniencies that motorists sometimes faced with law enforcement agencies along the way from the border.
Over 2 500 second hand vehicles are imported into the country through the Beitbridge border post monthly, while a significant number comes in through other ports such as Plumtree, Kazungula, Mutare and Chirundu.
Some of the cars have ended up being fraudulently registered.
