A CHIPINGE man last week decided to cut his life short by hanging himself after "terrible encounters with evil spirits".
Police confirmed the death of Clement Mherehari (30) of Matandana village under Chief Mutema ,who also attempted to set ablaze his wife and three children before he hanged himself.
He locked his family in a kitchen hut and lit a fire intending to burn them all but his wife, Liza Muzama (28), managed to break the door open and they escaped.
Mherehari had confided to his brother, Lucky Mherehari (33) that he was contemplating committing suicide since he was "in trouble" with evil spirits.
Assistant Manicaland police spokesman, Assistant Inspector, Luxson Chananda confirmed the suicide.
"He told his brother that some evil spirits was bringing confusion and disorder in his family and he was contemplating killing himself but he had to kill his family first. Lucky advised him against the idea and told him to solve his problem amicably," he said.
Upon arriving home, Clementlocked his wife and their three children aged eight, seven, seven months in a kitchen hut before he set it on fire.
He also burnt the bedroom hut. Liza, however, managed to break the kitchen door and rescued the children. The bedroom hut was razed to the ground.
"Clement's relatives realised that he was missing and launched a search. They found him hanging from a tree branch four kilometres away from his homestead," Ass Insp Chananda said.
