Zimbabwe-UN in a 4year financial aid deal

The Zimbabwe government and the United Nations have signed a 2012 -2015 Zimbabwe United Nations Development Assistance Framework Document under which the world body has agreed to provide financial support for national development priorities and for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
Under the framework, the UN has agreed to provide funding of not less US$600 million to various areas.
The document which spells out the areas that will be prioritised for United Nations financial suport to Zimbabwe for the next 4 years, was signed by the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda on the Zimbabwean side and the UN Resident Coordinator , Mr Alain Noudehou in Harare this Thursday afternoon.
Some of the priority areas earmarked for the UN support are pro-poor sustainable growth, improvement of social services including health, access to HIV and AIDS treatment and care, provision of safe and adequate water supply, attainment of food security at household level, women's empowerment, gender equality as well as good governance.
The support framework was jointly authored by Zimbabwe government and the UN arms as well as other interest groups.
In his remarks at the signing ceremony, Dr Sibanda said government is determined to see that the United Nations assistance is managed with greater accountability and transparency and urged the world body to shift its thrust from humanitarian assistance to development assistance.
Dr Sibanda noted that Zimbabwe is not a classic humanitarian case and as such some resources could be earmarked for development projects.
In response, Mr Noudehou welcomed the positive developments that Zimbabwe has registered in the economic sector in recent years and stressed the need to sustain the momentum.
He however challenged the country to continue working hard to improve social services.
The signing ceremony was attended by Permanent Secretaries of various ministries, the Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Ray Ndhlukula , Retired Colonel Christian Katsande, the EU Resident Representative, Mr Aldo Dellariccia, some UN agencies' representatives as well as representatives of some interest groups.
