Medical doctor challenges Chiyangwa
13 Feb 2013 at 13:14hrs | Views
Specialist medical doctor Samuel Mvurume has expressed interest in contesting the Chinhoyi parliamentary seat in the upcoming elections on a Zanu-PF ticket
The move sets him on a collision path with businessman-cum-politician Phillip Chiyangwa who has also declared himself the "legitimate and rightful" party candidate.
Mvurume told NewsDay yesterday that he had the political "stamina" to win primaries and the eventual plebiscite as his door-to-door campaign, already underway, had endeared him with the electorate.
"I am fully aware there are comrades using megaphone politics campaigning to represent the party.
"However, I am confident that after all the jockeying, I will emerge the sole Zanu-PF candidate for Chinhoyi constituency.
"I have rolled out an interface exercise asking voters to elect me. My campaign thrust is not targeted at primaries but the actual poll and I will not use money to win people's hearts. I have also set up ward development committees that would identify needs and proffer solutions," Mvurume said.
Just like Chiyangwa who has lately been distributing day-old chicks and piglets to lure votes, Mvurume has been offering free medical treatment to the public.
The urologist denounced the imposition of candidates which he said contributed to Zanu-PF's defeat in 2008.
Mvurume had in the 2008 polls, shown interest to stand on a Zanu-PF ticket, but was elbowed out after he was adjudged ineligible to stand.
Consequently, the former ruling party fielded the late Robert Sikanyika, but he lost to incumbent MDC-T MP Stewart Garadhi.
Other candidates likely to contest the Zanu-PF primaries in the constituency include governor Faber Chidarikire, councillor Richard Chafausipo, Simba Kanzou and Matthew Magureyi.
