Police in Harare have arrested 60 suspected prostitutes that operate in and around the city.
Of the 60, Eusebia Mugauri (26), Yolanda Gwatidzo (29), Tatenda Nhidza (24), Angel Masasire (20), Nomatter Chikoto (23) and Nomsa Sibanda (19) appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Rebecca Takavadii. The six partially pleaded guilty to contravening Section 81 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9, 23 which criminalises soliciting for the purposes of prostitution.
Ms Takavadii remanded the six to today for sentencing and separation of trial. Prosecutor Ms Patience Chimusaru alleges that police received complaints over the conduct of prostitutes.
It is alleged, the suspects were seducing men all over town. On February 8, 30 police officers conducted an operation code named "No to loitering".
The operation was targeting prostitutes in the Avenues area and other parts surrounding Harare, it is alleged.
At around 8pm and in Harare central business district they were allegedly standing along streets with the intention of luring men so they can have sex and get paid, the court heard. Police officers allegedly arrested them at different points.
Harare police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tariro Dube confirmed the arrests.
"Forty have since been released after they paid admission of guilt fines while others who are denying their offences have since appeared in court for justice to take its course," she said.
