A 60-year-old woman in Chiredzi died last week after being stung by a scorpion in a case that continues to elicit sympathy across the town.

Mrs Kere Chaire of Chikuwa Village in Chief Sengwe's area died while being ferried to hospital. Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero confirmed the incident.

On February 11, Mrs Chaire and her 14-year-old niece, Mary Musisinyane, were asleep in their hut.

Suddenly, the 60-year-old screamed, prompting Mary to wake up. Mary lit a candle and saw a scorpion leave the hut.

It was later discovered the killer critter had stung Mrs Chaire on the stomach.

The senior citizen died as she was being ferried to Chikombedzi District Hospital the following morning.
