Principals to the Global Political Agreement, who met in Harare on Monday, have agreed to the appointment of current Chairperson of the Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) and Supreme Court judge, Justice Rita Makarau as the Acting Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairperson.
The development follows the resignation of Justice Simpson Mutambanengwe who was chairing the electoral body since March 2010.
Announcing the development, Justice and Legal Affairs Minister, Patrick Chinamasa said under the constitution, the President will be required to consult the JSC and the Parliamentary Committee on Standing Rules and Orders before confirming the appointment.
Chinamasa stated that Justice Makarau will be Acting Chairperson from the date of appointment to the end of December, a period in which she will be responsible for running the referendum and the harmonised elections as well as doing the report on the elections.
Asked how long the consultations will take, Minister Chinamasa said he has already written to the two arms that need to be consulted and awaits the inputs from the two sides.
