NewsDay journalist, Obey Manayiti, charged with criminal insult was on Wednesday, 20  February 2013 released from custody in the eastern border town of Mutare after the State decided not to proceed with the matter.

According to ManayitiÂ’s lawyer, Rangarirai Mubata, the State would now proceed by way of summons.

Background

Manayiti who is based in Mutare, was arrested at Mutare Central Police station on Monday, 18 February 2013 for allegedly insulting suspended Zanu-PF Manicaland provincial youth chairman Tawanda Mukodza.

He was released on the same day only to be re-detained the next day and spending a night in police cells.

Ironically, Manayiti was arrested at the police station when he went there to report a case against Mukodza who had allegedly tried to assault him for allegedly writing negative stories which led to his suspension. Mukodza reportedly issued a death threat against the journalist.
