The government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to develop small to medium enterprises' business solutions by supporting new and existing business ideas.

The Ministry of Small to Medium Enterprises and Cooperative Development has gone into partnership with the IRC aimed at supporting various developmental projects which will address the plight of the poor through economically sustainable income generating projects.

Speaking during the signing of a MoU in Harare, SMEs Minister Sithembiso Nyoni said most NGOs lose credibility as they concentrate more on social issues than developmental ones.

"I am very pleased with the support given to the ministry. IRC has strengthened our capacity by facilitating training of ministry officials," said Nyoni.

IRC country director Mustafa Elkanza said his organisation aims at supporting new market entrance to access finance through banks and other credit schemes to ensure a market driven development that will continue to bear fruit even after his organisation's withdrawal.

"Our economic recovery programme has helped over 2,500 farmers to improve their production and sell their produce to formal markets," Elkanza said.

Some of the beneficiaries commended the programme by the non-governmental organisation.

The IRC has been operating in Zimbabwe since 2008 and one of its key activities has been economic recovery and development.
