Dr Ignatius Chombo, the Local Government Rural and Urban Development Minister says from next month government will introduce the food for work programme as a mitigation measure against food shortages.
Minister Chombo was speaking at the official installation of Chief Short Kanzou Chiswiti the 7th of Dande Valley in ,Mt Darwin.
He said elderly persons will however receive food handouts for free.
Dr Chombo's revelations come in the wake of the imminent food insecurity in some parts of the country as a result of this year's prolonged dry spell.
He said the Chiswiti people are priviledged to have Chief Kanzou as their traditional leader since he possesses a good record as a patriotic and dedicated citizen.
Chombo said government attaches great importance to the role of chiefs as custodians of culture and traditional values hence its continued improvement of their welfare.
