A 31-year-old man from Chivi in Masvingo province allegedly committed suicide by hanging after his mother and wife denied him permission to sell his two beasts so that he could buy a car, police revealed.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Tuesday at about 9pm. He identified the now deceased as Mr Tinashe Mangezi, of Mutiri village under Headman Madzivire. he said on the fateful day, Mr Mangezi came home late at night from a beer drink and approached his mother asking for permission to sell his own beasts.

"The man arrived late at about 9pm while drunk and approached his mother Mrs Rudo MNangezi in the kitchen. He told his mother that he wanted to sell his two beasts so that he could buy a car," said Insp Zhanero.

Mrs reportedly turned down the request saying it was not a good idea.

"After that he proceeded to his matrimonial bedroom hut where he told his wife Linda Guzha of his idea but the wife also rejected the idea," said Insp Zhanero.

After realising that he had failed to get support, Mr Mangezi reportedly pretended as if he was visiting the toilet and disappeared into the darkness. He was found a few hours later hanging from a tree.

Police attended the scene but postmortem was waived and no foul play is suspected.
