Rapists sentenced to do community service

FOUR Mvuma men who last month took turns to rape a form two pupil have been sentenced to 280 hours of community service.
The four, Brighton Vavarirai, Mcdonald Chigwembe, Donny Madzuso, Munyaradzi Firo all from Mvuma town were facing charges of statutory rape involving a 13-year-old girl whose name is being withheld for her protection.
They pleaded guilty to the charge when they appeared before Gweru magistrate, Mr Sithembinkosi Msipa.
Vavarirai, Chigwembe, Madzuso and Firo were sentenced to 12 months in prison. However, four months were suspended on condition of good behaviour while the remaining eight months were suspended on condition that they do community service at Mvuma Primary, Jerere Primary Schools, and ZRP police Mvuma for 280 hours.
For the State, Mr Taurai Mutodzi told the court that on a day not known to him but sometime in February, Vavarirai met the 13-year juvenile in Mushavabvudzi township in Mvuma town stranded with no place to spend the night.
Mr Mutodzi said Vavarirai then offered the girl a place to stay for the night.
The court heard that while at the house, Vavariro proposed love to the juvenile.
Mr Mutodzi said that night the two had sex once. He said Vavarirai left for work, leaving the girl at his house.
The court heard that while at the house, Chigwembe, who is a friend to Vavarirai, came to the house and proposed love to the 13-year old girl.
Mr Mutodzi said the two had sex in the house once.
The court heard that Madzuso who is also a friend to Vavarirai and Chigwembe then came to the house at around 7pm and found the girl asleep.
Mr Mutodzi said Madzuso also proposed to the girl and had sex with the minor over night.
The court heard that on the following morning at around 9am the girl left Vavarirai's house for her parents' home.
Mr Mutodzi said on that day the girl met Firo who also proposed to her.
The court heard that Firo took the girl to his house in Mvuma and slept with her.
The court heard that the girl then met her family pastor on her way home.
The pastor quickly recognised the girl and expressed concern as her mother had been searching for her and had already reported her as missing.
The pastor took the girl to her mother.
The court heard that while home the teenager was interrogated by the mother and she confessed to her mother everything that happened while she was in the company of the four men.
Mr Mutodzi said the matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the four.
