A Mberengwa man is battling for his life after he was attacked with a sharp instrument at the back of his head for accidentally spilling beer on a fellow patron.

The man, Mr Langford Gumbi of Matshova Village under Chief Chingoma, Mberengwa, was assaulted while drinking beer at a council-owned bar at Musume Business Centre.

He was rushed to Mnene Hospital where his condition is reported to be critical.

Acting police spokesperson for Midlands, Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident which occurred last Friday at around 10pm.

"We are investigating a case of attempted murder in which the complainant, Mr Gumbi, was struck at the back of his head by an unknown suspect. It is alleged that on this day, the complainant was at Musume Business Centre drinking beer. He accidentally spilled beer on the suspect. A dispute then arose between the two. The heated argument resulted in the suspect drawing a sharp object from his trousers pocket and stabbed Mr Gumbi on the back of the head," said Asst Insp Mahoko.

Asst Insp Mahoko said Mr Gumbi sustained a deep cut at the back of the head as a result of the attack. Asst Insp Mahoko said the suspect immediately fled from the scene after committing the crime.

He said the matter was reported to the police who attended the scene.

"Investigations are in progress. Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect. We are appealing to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect to approach the nearest police station. They can also make use of our suggestion boxes," said Asst Insp Mahoko.
