THREE MDC-T youth members were yesterday arraigned before the magistrate for allegedly assaulting the party's provincial director of elections on Saturday.

The clash is one of the spates of internal rivalry for leadership positions in the party.

MDC-T loyalists were injured at the party's provincial election congress held at the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) offices on Saturday.

Ntonga Mhlanga (21), of 61834 Pelandaba, Lloyd Chamboko (27), of 61835 Pelandaba and Witness Dube (34), of Block 8/4035 Magwegwe North were arrested on Saturday after the skirmish. Dube is the party's aspiring candidate for youth provincial chairman.

The clashes allegedly involved party supporters loyal to Mr Gorden Moyo and those in support of Mr Matson Hlalo, the Mzilikazi Senator who lost the BulawayoProvince chairmanship to Mr Moyo.

Mhlanga, Chamboko, Dube and another youth member who is still at large allegedly assaulted Mr Clint Chigumbu of Block 4/58276 Mabutweni with an iron bar on the head and he fell down unconscious.

The trio was not formally charged when they appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Ndumo Masuku facing a charge of contravening Section 89 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23 (assault).

They were released on US$50 bail and instructed to reside at their given addresses and not to interfere with witnesses until the matter is finalised.

The three will next appear in court on 30 May.

Mr Hlabezulu Malinga, of Job Sibanda and Associates represents Mhlanga, Chamboko and Dube.

The trio allegedly struck and dragged Chigumbu to a secluded place where they tied him with an electric cord and continued to assault him.

Mr Chigumbu sustained a deep cut on the head and was rushed to hospital where he was treated and discharged.

Miss Marylyn Mtshina appeared for the State.
