POLICE have recorded a statement from the Zimbabwe Peace Project director Jestina Mukoko, whose organisation is allegedly involved in espionage.

Mukoko handed herself over to the police last Friday.

Mukoko went to the police a day after law enforcement agents reported that she was on the run and appealed to anyone with information leading to her arrest to come forward.

Police wanted to interview her in connection with the confiscated documents and communication devices her organisation was distributing to its recruits countrywide.

Chief police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba yesterday said investigations were still in progress.

"A warned and cautioned statement has since been recorded as investigations on the case continue," Assistant Commissioner  Charamba  said.

State media reports that Mukoko was released and a docket had since been compiled.

She is expected to appear in court soon. Mukoko's arrest comes after police found ZPP with communication gadgetry that includes Eton Microlink radios and Huawei Ascend Y100 cellphones fitted with geographical positioning system (GPS) reportedly to be used in the run-up to the elections and the actual poll.

ZPP is led by Mukoko, who was once  arrested for engaging in activities deemed to be detrimental to the State.

She was freed by the Supreme Court on the basis of some constitutional breaches.

It is illegal for anyone to possess or operate signal transmission equipment other than in accordance with a licence issued by either the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe or Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe.

Police recently warned Non Governmental Organisations against flouting their mandates by distributing radios and other communication equipment illegally.
