A man from Beatrice was on Monday sentenced to a five-year term of imprisonment for raping his two step sisters aged 12 and 13 on four occasions.
The 18-year-old man denied four counts of rape when he appeared before Chitungwiza regional magistrate Ms Estere Chivasa.
He was convicted after the State led by Ms Joice Fusire proved its case.Ms Chivasa sentenced him to nine years for all counts but conditionally set aside four years for the next five years.
In sentencing the man, Ms Chivasa noted that the man took advantage of the absence of the two girls' father who deserted his family. During the stay with the two sisters, he would rape them and they would inform his mother who did not do anything about it or sometimes would assault them.
Circumstances were that on the dates unknown to the prosecutor but sometime in June last year, and during the night, the man sneaked into the dining room where the two were sleeping.
While in the room, he started fondling the 12-year-old and raped her. After the act, he threatened her and went back to his room. The following morning, he bought her some sweets so that she could conceal the offence.
On another day, he got into the girl's blankets and when she tried to scream, he gagged her using her blanket and raped her.The man went on to rape the girl's elder sister using the same modus operandi.
When the two sisters informed their stepmother, the court heard that she would assault them. The offence came to light when their father took them to the hospital where the doctor informed him that they were sexually abused.
He reported the matter to the police leading to the man's arrest.
