A HARARE woman stunned the Harare Civil Court when she revealed that a man she has been cohabiting with for four years hid his true identity and she only discovered his true identity after he was arrested.
Ndanatsiwa Masimba, a teacher at Mukai Primary School in Highfield first met Ngoni Musami in 2009.
Masimba is seeking a protection order against Musami.
"I discovered his real name at a police station on December 8 in 2012 after dating him for three years. Two days later, that is when I first met his relatives since we started dating in 2009.
"We started cohabiting as husband and wife in 2010 and he paid rent four times since then. I am employed as a teacher at Mukai and we have a child together," Masimba said.
She said she tried to find information about Musami to no avail.
"I tried on numerous occasions to dig information about his origins, but I failed. At the time, he would postpone whenever we planned to take our child's birth certificate because whatever he was saying he would be lying.
"He even told me he was permanently employed at ZBC (Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation) and I had to go there to inquire about him. The authorities said they did not know anybody by his name.
"Afterwards, he said he was employed at Zimbabwe Music Corporation and StarFM. I would give him a dollar everyday in the morning for transport. It pains me because I even added him on my funeral policy with the fake name he first told me and a lot of money is being deducted from my salary right now," Masimba said.
She said she tried several times to meet Musami's relatives, but he refused. "I was interested in meeting them back then, but now I am fed up with his deceitfulness. I want him out of my house and barred from visiting my workplace because sometimes he becomes violent towards me."
In his defence, Musami said he lied to her because he was not serious when he started dating her.
"I used to support her when I was employed and I was forced to lie when I first met her in the street because I did not know our love would go very far. At the time I did not know she was a teacher.
"I do not want to be evicted because right now she is sleeping in the bedroom while I am sleeping in the kitchen. I do not want to be a destitute and I am asking for the court's mercy," Musami said.
Magistrate Ms Vongai Muchuchuti ordered Musami to observe peace towards Masimba.
"Vacate at the end of the month and there is no basis to stay together since you are not customarily or legally married to her."
