Members of staff at the privately-owned newspaper, The Zimbabwean, on Monday, 18 March 2013 reportedly vacated their offices in the capital Harare following suspicious ‘Unknown’ calls to the news editor Tawanda Majoni.

The suspicious persons called Majoni demanding to talk to the reporter who wrote a story published in last week's issue about Army General, Constantine Chiwenga, allegedly agreeing to rein in a senior Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operative in the eastern border town of Mutare. The story was headlined: Chiwenga to rein in gun-toting CIO boss.

The suspicious caller told Majoni that he wanted the news editor and the reporter to meet him at Jameson Hotel in Harare as he had information to add to the story.

Majoni then requested details over the phone but the caller, who identified himself only as ‘Moyo’, insisted that they should meet personally. “I ignored his invitation, suspecting he could be up to something fishy,” said Majoni

About 30 minutes later, the unidentified person called the advertising executive's phone and asked for the reporter's number, but she declined to give it to him. “During their conversation, he said he was looking for our offices and wanted the exact directions to the office so that he could "submit an article,” said Majoni.

Following this, the office has been evacuated and the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) have been alerted of the developments.
