The Fallen Heroes of Zimbabwe Trust (FHZT) has begun preliminary work at the Rusape Heroes Acre where they intend to exhume and re-bury the remains of thousands of people who were executed and dumped in shallow graves by the Rhodesian forces.
The work that will involve the identification, exhumations and reburials, follows a request by the traditional and local leadership in Makoni to have the place cleansed.
The chairperson of the FHZT, George Rutanhire said the organisation will not rest until they have accorded decent burials to all the comrades whose remains still lie in shallow graves across the country.
The Eastern Region Director for the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe Dr Paul Mupira said they will partner the FHZT to preserve and document the history of the site.
The site known during the liberation struggle as the 'butcher' was also used as a Rhodesian Martial Court, where political prisoners were subjected to extra judicial killings.
The Rhodesian forces also used civilians as moving targets in military training
