Prominent human rights lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa who is facing charges of obstructing the course of justice has appeared in court in Harare.

Mtetwa was brought to court after filing various applications at the High Court challenging her arrest and detention by the police.

High Court Judge, Justice Charles Hungwe initially granted Mtetwa a provisional order for her immediate release by the police.

However, the state claims to have filed an opposing affidavit, stating that Mtetwa's arrest was lawful.

The state said Mtetwa blocked police officers and later shouted at them when they were conducting a lawful search at the Institute of Democratic Alliance of Zimbabwe offices.

According to the state media Zbc, Mtetwa's conduct was "allegedly violent" and "created confusion resulting in some documents being whisked away from the premises."

The state argues that Mtetwa's conduct does not inspire confidence in the legal profession, adding that her actions were not consistent with those of an experienced legal practitioner.

Meanwhile, High Court Judge, Justice Ben Hlathwayo has dismissed Mtetwa's application and the provisional order falls out.

The state is on Wednesday expected to make a response to the lawyer's bail application.
