The Minister of Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs, Advocate Eric Matinenga has expressed confidence that the Draft Constitution Bill will receive two thirds majority when it is taken to parliament for debate on the 7th of May this year.
Briefing the media on the way forward after the successful referendum, Advocate Matinenga said the draft constitution will be published in the government gazette on the 28 of this month and forwarded to parliament on the 7th of May for debate.
Advocate Matinenga said since the parliament has already adopted the draft, he is confident that the draft will receive the two thirds majority paving way for the President to sign it in to law leading to the harmonised elections this year.
On the day for elections, Matinenga says while he is not at liberty to reveal the date, the life of parliament will end on the 29th of June.
Other issues that will be addressed concurrently with the process of making a new constitution will be the alignment of electoral laws, local government and others.
The announcement by Advocate Matinenga follows the successful holding of the referendum which saw 93 percent of the people voting in favour of the draft constitution on the 16th of this month.
3 079 966 people voted YES, while 179 489 voted NO. There were 56 627 spoilt votes.
