Female parliamentarians from Zimbabwe were part of various legislators and other stakeholders who attended the recently held 57th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Women in Parliament Caucus Chairperson, Beatrice Nyamupinga told state media that with Zimbabwe just coming out of a constitution making exercise where its citizens voted for the adoption of a supreme law which highly favours women, the conference provided important lessons.

Nyamupinga said local legislators shared their experiences with other lawmakers and gender based violence activists from around the globe.

"The conference provided important lessons and we appreciate that it comes at a time when we just voted to support an important constitution," she said.

This year's 57th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women's priority theme was 'The Prevention and Elimination of all Forms of Violence Against Women and Girls.'

The conference brought together thousands of government officials and representatives of the United Nations, civil society, the media and the private sector.

The delegates reviewed progress, shared experiences and best practices while analysing gaps and challenges to come up with consensus on priority actions to accelerate progress on gender equality issues.
