Vice President Joice Mujuru has challenged women to uphold the values of peace and unity which they are naturally endowed with as the country prepares for harmonised elections.

Mujuru made the remarks at a belated International Women's Day commemorations held in Harare where women and girls from various sectors converged at the Harare International Conference Centre.

Vice President Mujuru, who was the Guest of Honour, said in 2008 principals in the GPA committed themselves to a gender sensitive constitution which guaranteed the socio-economic and political rights of women.

She commended women for supporting the constitution process.

Mujuru said as the country prepares for harmonised elections, women should conduct themselves in an exemplary manner.

The Minister of Women's Affairs, Gender and Community Development, Dr Olivia Muchena said the '4 Ps' campaign, a strategy focusing on prevention, protection, programmes and participation is yielding positive results.

In a speech read on his behalf by Co-Minister of Home Affairs Theresa Makone, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai called on police to step up efforts of bringing perpetrators of violence to book.

In Zimbabwe, a disturbing trend is emerging where even babies are increasingly becoming victims of gender violence.

Men are also becoming victims but they suffer in silence.

However, there is greater awareness of domestic violence and the country has witnessed an increase in the number of reported cases to the ZRP Victim Friendly Units.

In 2008, 1 904 cases were reported, while in 2010 the cases had increased to 7 628 and last year 10 871 cases were reported to the police.

International Women's Day is commemorated on the 8th of March every year across the globe.

Women who attended the commemorations including Vice President Mujuru could not be left out as they danced to the theme song: 'Peace Begins With Me' which is a collaboration of 15 local artists including Sulumani Chimbetu, Sniper Storm, Bob Nyabinde, Edith Weutonga and Albert Nyathi among others.
