Zimbabwe lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa, has warned of more arrests of human rights lawyers as the country heads to elections. Speaking on her release on bail, she said her arrest was an attack on the legal fraternity and meant to intimidate lawyers working to protect human rights.
A High court today overturned a magistrate's ruling, denying Mtetwa bail. She had been behind bars since her arrest on March 17. "It is not a personal attack on me. It is an attack on all human rights lawyers," says Mtetwa.
She says that she was being used as an example, that she is the first one and that there will be many more to follow. "We are going in to election mode and the warning is that people cannot continue to do this as they are human rights lawyers," says Mtetwa.
Mtetwa says what is happening to her will happen to others soon.
