Cop survives machete, axe attack

A KADOMA-based cop is battling for life after being struck several times with a machete and an axe while trying to arrest suspected illegal gold panners.

Sergeant Shorai Murimakamwe, who is based at Patchway base station in Kadoma, was following up on a report that Evans Hove and his brother Lawrence were threatening

patrons with machetes at Gomba nightclub. Sgt Murimakamwe was struck several times on the legs with an iron bar, axe and a machete and he sustained serious injuries including broken legs and hand.

He was taken to Kadoma General Hospital from where he was transferred to Harare.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident, adding that police had arrested Lawrence.
Evans was still on the run.

"We are dealing with a very sad incident in which a member of the police Sergeant Murimakamwe was attacked by machetes, an iron bar and an axe in the course of discharging his lawful duties," he said.

Sgt Murimakamwe had received a report that two people were threatening patrons with machetes and an axe.

He attended the scene with four colleagues. They team followed the brothers, who disappeared but suddenly emerged from the tall grass and pounced on the policemen. Evans assaulted Sgt Murimakamwe using an iron bar and a machete several times.
