A shopping structure with eight sub divisions belonging to MDC 99 leader, Job Sikhala was destroyed in a fire that the owner claims was a political act.

According to some eye witnesses, the shopping structure located at Huruyadzo Shopping Centre in St Marys, Chitungwiza was seen in flames just after midnight on Monday evening.

"We just saw smoke and heard a sound of bursting asbestos coming from the shop," said one eyewitness who cooks Sadza at the shopping centre.

Sikhala claims the fire was caused by his political enemies, adding that he had just unravelled plans by members of parliament to be awarded golden handshakes just before the harmonised elections.

"I have a lot of political enemies and I am sure that this has been done to scare me. I have been very vocal during the referendum campaign and I have just recently unravelled plans by parliament to give hefty packages to MPs before elections," he said.

Tenants at the shopping structure who are operating various ventures including a butchery, hair salon, canteen and a hardware shop said the incident has disrupted their business operations.

Only last week, Sikhala openly criticised Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai for dumping his founding colleagues.

Sikhala, together with National Constitutional Assembly leader Lovemore Madhuku and Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe President Raymond Majongwe launched a scathing attack on the MDC-T leader, claiming that he is no longer standing for the values that saw the party being formed from a labour movement.
