IN an effort to avert humiliation associated with failure to fulfill fatherly duties, Aleck Makuyana (48), landed himself in jail after he was convicted of stealing a goat whose meat his wife had demanded in order to boost the production of breast milk.

Makuyana was last Thursday convicted of stocktheft and was slapped with a 12-month jail term. Three months of the sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

The State led by Mr Thembalami Dhliwayo, said on March 20, Makuyana of Farm 34 in Middle Sabi, stole a goat from Lucky Mhlanga's farm and slaughtered it.

"Makuyana went to his neighbour's farm at around midnight and strangled a he-goat to death. He carried it on his shoulder to his place where he skinned the goat and sliced the meat for drying before cooking some of it.

"The following morning, Mhlanga and his employees discovered the theft and carried their own investigations. They received a tip-off from sources that had spotted Makuyana carrying the goat the previous night.

"Mhlanga reported the matter to the police who raided Makuyana's quarters where they found his wife cooking the meat. Mhlanga managed to positively identify the goat's head and its hide as the one belonging to his stolen goat," he said.

Makuyana confessed to having stolen the goat leading to his arrest.

On being asked why he committed the offence, a remorseful Makuyana told the court that he wanted to give the meat to his wife to ensure more breast milk for his son who had been born the previous day.

"I had just been blessed with a baby boy and I wanted to help my wife increase the production of breast milk," he said, amid roars of laughter from the gallery.

Mr Makamera Waini heard the case.
