The Constitutional Bill is expected to be tabled before parliament for debate on the 7th of May.

As the constitution making process continues, before the final law is adopted, constitutional lawyer Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana says the process of introducing the Constitutional Bill to parliament has begun.

This follows the gazetting on Thursday of the draft constitution as a Constitutional Bill.

Mr Mangwana said according to the law, the bill is supposed to be gazetted for 30 days before it is taken to parliament for debate.

He acknowledged that the period given to the parliament to review the document which is between March 28 and May 7 provides enough time for the process.

If the two thirds majority required to pass the bill is obtained from the House of Assembly and Senate on May 7, the bill will then be passed into law after the President appends his signature.

According to the Minister of Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Eric Matinenga, no major amendments were done to the draft constitution except a few technical aspects.

He said the responsible ministries would soon start aligning various laws with the new constitution as the country heads for harmonised elections soon.

These include the laws relating to the elections such as the electoral law and local government rule, among others.

On March 16, Zimbabweans went to the polls and voted for the draft constitution, which will soon usher in the new supreme law of the country.

This will be followed by harmonised elections later in the year.
