Kombi drivers and Harare City Council clash
30 Mar 2013 at 14:39hrs | Views

The clampdown on kombis by Harare City Council has failed to bring sanity in the CBD, but has instead caused congestion.
The congestion that has seen commuter omnibuses blocking traffic along roads with ranks has caused clashes between council and transporters.
The two parties have clashed over the issue of designated terminus in the central business, as transporters contend that the ranks are too small to cater for the volume of commuter buses.
Greater Harare Council of Commuter Operators vice spokesperson, Ngoni Katsvairo, says council should address the problem fast as it is affecting business.
Council spokesperson Leslie Gwindi, however, has professed ignorance over the congestion and remained adamant that the operation is the solution to bringing sanity to the city.
The clampdown on commuter omnibuses without proper documentation has caused untold suffering for commuters who are now being overcharged.
The situation has also affected traffic flow during peak periods.
The ranks are clearly too small to accommodate all the kombis plying the greater Harare routes.
